Fine Art

This category includes those artworks that are created primarily for aesthetic reasons ('art for art's sake') rather than for commercial or functional use.

Designed for its uplifting, life-enhancing qualities, fine art typically denotes the traditional, Western European 'high arts', such as:

Drawing using charcoal, chalk, crayon, pastel, oils, watercolor or with pencil or pen and ink. Two major applications include illuminated manuscripts (c.600-1200) and book illustrations. PaintingUsing oils, watercolor, gouache....more pictures.

Abstract Painting
Abstract art uses a visual language of form, color, and line to create a composition which may exist with a degree of independence from visual references in the world. Western art had been, from the Renaissance up to the middle of the 19th century, underpinned by the logic of perspective and an attempt to reproduce an illusion of visible reality.

The arts of cultures other than the European had become accessible and showed alternative ways of describing visual experience to the artist.

Palette Knife
Painting with a knife is a bit like putting butter or jam on bread and produces quite a different result to a brush. Painting knives are excellent for producing textured, impasto work and sweeping areas of flat color as well as tiny shapes of color.

Although there is a difference between a painting knife and a palette knife, many people use the terms interchangeably. I don't see that it really matters. The main difference is, after all, that it's not a brush that you're using to paint.
